Engine, a hospitality startup backed by private equity firm Permira, has acquired Options Travel, a traditional travel management company (TMC). The move marks a strategic pivot for Engine, which spent the past decade selling hotel rooms directly to mid-market companies without formal travel programs.

Engine plans to leverage Options Travel's TMC infrastructure and expertise to build what it describes as the next-generation corporate booking platform. The company targets business travelers who currently book through legacy systems or outdated software, positioning its tool as modern and streamlined compared to established competitors like Concur, Amadeus, and BCD Travel.

This acquisition reflects a broader shift in business travel technology. Mid-market companies increasingly demand intuitive booking experiences that rival consumer apps like Expedia and Booking.com, not clunky enterprise software from the 1990s. Engine spotted an opportunity: the TMC sector needed disruption.

Engine's previous strength lay in negotiating hotel rates and embedding itself into corporate procurement. Now with Options Travel's operational foundation, it gains access to airline and ground transportation networks, policy compliance tools, and expense integration. The combined entity can offer companies end-to-end travel booking from a single platform.

The corporate travel market remains fragmented and ripe for consolidation. Traditional TMCs face pressure from younger competitors and the shift toward self-service booking. Engine's acquisition signals confidence that businesses will abandon legacy systems for something better designed.

Permira's backing provides capital for product development and market expansion. Engine competes against newer entrants like TravelPerk and Navan, which also target business travelers frustrated with outdated experiences. The difference is Engine's decade-long relationships with mid-market buyers and Options Travel's operational depth.

For travel managers and procurement teams, Engine's move offers an alternative to the traditional TMC model. For business travelers, it promises booking software that finally feels modern.
